RPZ 23 is here! - August 14, 2007
by Ann McCurdy

The Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) has determined that four contiguous blocks along East Madison St. between 27th Ave E and 29th Ave E meet the criterion for a Residential Parking Zone (RPZ).  Cars without RPZ permits will be restricted to a maximum of two hours of parking from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., except for Sundays and holidays.  Residents within the RPZ can purchase RPZ permits for $35.  The permit is good for two years. On Tuesday, August 14th, SDOT workers posted Zone 23 signage on the applicable streets.

Although neighbors do not appear to have yet received notification (as of Aug 14th), SDOT says it will mail out information, including how to purchase RPZ permits if you live within the RPZ boundaries.  For more information, please call the SDOT at (206) 684-5086, or go to http://www.seattle.gov/transportation/parking/parkingrpz.htm).

If you know for sure that you live within the Zone 23 boundaries, you can download an application form here. (If you do not have Adobe Acrobat, you can download it here.)

It’s that time of year again!  Get to know your Madison Valley neighbors by joining them for Family Fun in the Sun!  All proceeds support your community council, and the low, low admission price gets you: Hamburgers, hotdogs, sides and drinks  · Music and entertainment, including Doug Fleming, Jr. · Balloons from Benny the Balloon Guy  · A playground for the kids · A visit from our local firefighters in their pumper truck  · The Dessert Contest  (Bring your own entry for the judges!), the raffle and more!

Click here for a map of the Valley School - 309 31st Ave East.

We need people to help out with setup, cleanup, music, serving food and getting the message out!  To volunteer, send email to volunteer@madisonvalley.org, or call Frank Lawler at  568-7372.

Dessert Contest Rules

Entries must be home-made and be of a sufficient size for three tasting samples as well as a reasonable remaining amount for some of the general public to try. Our panel of three judges will sample each entry and vote on 1st, 2nd and 3rd place.  Awards will include items donated by Madison Valley merchants, such as a $100 gift certificate from Designed Dinners and a Rover's cookbook signed by Chef Thierry.

Raffle

The price of your ticket to the event includes one entry to the raffle of great prizes donated by Madison Valley Merchants, such as a one-hour massage from Madison Park Physical Therapy, a gardener's gift set from City People's and Pilates sessions from Conscious Body Pilates!

Neighborhood Block Parties - Tuesday, August 7th

Seattle Night Out is Tuesday, 8/7! Every year, Seattle takes part in a nationwide event to promote neighborhood safety, increase crime-prevention awareness, and provide a chance for neighbors to get to know one another. Last year several blocks in Madison Valley closed off their street to traffic, pulled out the grills and had a great time. For more info or to register your block for Seattle Night Out, click here. Deadline for registration is 7/27. The block parties will also be a great way to let neighbors know about the Madison Valley Community BBQ on Sunday, 8/12. Please let us know if you plan to have a block party 8/7, and we can get you info about the 8-12 BBQ to have on hand.

Memorial Fund for Kate Fleming

As most of you know, one of our neighbors, Kate Fleming, drowned in her basement on Dec 14th, 2006, when a flash flood wiped out the foundation of her house and trapped her underwater. If you haven’t seen news reports about this tragedy, you can read about it here.

Kate leaves behind her life partner Charlene, who, in addition to losing Kate, has also lost most of her possessions in the flood, including the house, which will not be restored.

Thanks to the efforts of concerned neighbor Janelle Graves, an  account has been set up in Memory of Kate Fleming to help Charlene to re-establish herself and create a new home. If you would like to make a donation, you can go to any Washington Mutual branch and ask to donate to the Fund In Memory of Kate Fleming. The account number is 3061486459.

The P-I has a brief article about the fund.
